West Virginia PROMISE Scholarship

West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission

This scholarship was established to provide assistance to high school graduates to help them pay for a college education at public or independent institutions in West Virginia. Applicants must be a resident of West Virginia for at least twelve consecutive months preceding the PROMISE Scholarship deadline.

  • Age/Grade Level:
    Must complete high school graduation requirements at a West Virginia public or private high school.
  • Minimum GPA:
    3.0
  • Financial Need:

  • Other Academic Requirements:
    - Must complete at least one half of credits required for high school graduation through attendance at a public or private high school in the state of West Virginia.- ACT Score requirement: 22 composite score with a minimum of 20 in English, Mathematics, Science, and Reading.SAT Score requirement:New SAT Score requirement (For SAT test on or after March 2016)2016-17 PROMISE Award YearTotal score 1100.Math 510.Reading 27.The SAT writing portion is not included in the calculation of the composite score.Scores must be from a single testing date and cannot be combined from multiple test administrations.For Homeschooled Applicants:TASC Score Requirement: minimum score of 2750 with a passing score in each sub section.GED Score Requirement: minimum score of 2500.
  • Residence:
    A student and his/her parents must have resided in West Virginia continuously for twelve consecutive months preceding the PROMISE Scholarship deadline, unless member of armed services or a military dependent under Section 6 of the PROMISE Scholarship Program Rule PDF icon.
  • School:
    Must complete high school graduation requirements at a West Virginia public or private high school.
  • College:

  • Extracurricular:
    Applicants for PROMISE Scholarship awards are strongly urged to perform at least 20 hours of unpaid community service while in high school and college. The community service may include, but is not limited to, participating with non-profit, governmental, institutional or community-based organizations designed to improve the quality of life for community residents, meet the needs of community residents or foster civic responsibility.
