The Frank and Carol Pinkerton Orchestral Scholarship is provided to students who is pursuing a music education. The applicants who intend on becoming orchestral instructors in Alaska will be given preference.

  • Other Academic Requirements:
    Applicant must be enrolled full-time in a music education program by the beginning of the semester in which the award will be used.
  • Character Traits:
    Applicant must demonstrate motivation and musical potential.
  • Major/Career:
    Applicant must be pursuing a degree in music education with an emphasis in string instruments and intend on becoming orchestral instructors in Alaska

  • Essay:
    personal statement must be included in one of two ways, either a brief 2-3 minute oral statement in your audition video OR a written statement (no longer than 1000 words). Your personal statement should describe your background in stringed instruments and explain which university youve chosen to attend and why. Please explain why you want to pursue a career as an orchestra teacher. This statement is a significant part of the evaluation.
  • Recommendation Letters:
    One to two letters of recommendation from your instrumental music instructor is required and should attest to your musical capability and your commitment to music education.
  • Portfolio/Work Samples:
    The application must include an audition video for your instrument of choice. Videos may be uploaded on to Youtube and the link pasted in the application. Requirements for videos are as follows:a) Violin - 3-octave scales and arpeggios (ascending in one bow, then descending in one bow) in the keys of G and B flat major; one movement of a concerto or sonata or other solo of your choice; one etude from Mazas, Kreutzer or a more difficult selection.b) Viola - 3-octave scales and arpeggios (ascending in one bow, then descending in one bow) in the keys of C and E flat major; one movement of a concerto or sonata or other solo of your choice; one etude of your choice.c) Cello - 3-octave scales and arpeggios (8 notes in one bow) in the keys of C and E flat major; one movement of a concerto or sonata or other solo of your choice; one etude of your choice.d) String Bass - 2-octave scales and arpeggios (8 notes to a bow) in the keys of E and G major; one movement of a concerto or sonata or other solo of your choice; one etude of your choice.
