Philip Webb Award

Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings

This award was established in honor of Philip Webb, SPABs co-founder and architect. This award was intended to encourage and celebrate the sympathetic reuse of existing buildings and sensitive new design in historic context. This is open to students and architects in the early stages who wish to show their understanding of repair techniques, and their engagement with the SPABs principles in fitting the new to the old, as well as their design flair. This year SPAB is partnering with the charity UK Youth to offer its outdoor education centre, Avon Tyrrell, in the New Forest, as a live case study on which entrants can base their scheme. Avon Tyrrell is an intriguing house designed by W R Lethaby, Arts & Crafts architect, a key figure in the early years of the SPAB and Philip Webbs first biographer.
