American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation

Founded in 2004, the scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to medical students facing spiraling medical school debt. The scholarship is awarded to current third-year medical students who are approaching their final year of medical school. To be eligible, applicant must be nominated through the medical school dean's office or the dean's designate.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Age/Grade Level:
    Current third-year medical students who are approaching their final year of medical school. If a student is in a five-year program, they can be nominated either at the end of their third year or prior to their final year in medical school
  • Financial Need:
    Required
  • Residence:
    Must be permanent residents of the United States (or U.S. Citizen)
  • Citizenship:
    Must be citizens of the United States (or permanent residents of United States)
  • College:
    Must be currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. allopathic or osteopathic medical school
  • Major/Career:
    Must be a medical student
  • Miscellaneous:
    Must be nominated through the medical school dean's office or the dean's designate

Application Details

  • Judging Criteria:
    The scholarship takes into consideration academic excellence and financial need. Other considerations include community involvement, leadership and the candidate's personal statement.

  • Essay:
    Personal statement from the student outlining his or her career goals in the field of medicinemay not exceed one typed page with 1 margins and 10- to 12-point font
  • Recommendation Letters:
    Letters of recommendation from office of the dean or dean's designate and faculty member
  • Other Materials:
    USMLE or COMLEX transcript
