Swann Foundation Fund

Swann Foundation Fellowships is awarded annually to provide assistance to a fellow who conducts an ongoing scholarly research and writing projects in the field of caricature and cartoon. The applicant must be a candidate for an M.A. or Ph.D. degree in an accredited graduate program in a university to qualify. The fellowship begins in September.

  • Residence:
    Individuals who are not U.S. residents but who otherwise meet the above academic qualifications may also apply and be considered for a fellowship, contingent upon the applicant's visa eligibility.
  • College:
    The applicant must be pursuing a degree in an accredited graduate program in a university in the United States, Canada or Mexico and working toward the completion of a dissertation or thesis for that degree, or be engaged in postgraduate research within three years of receiving an M.A. or Ph.D.
  • Major/Career:
    The applicant must have an ongoing scholarly research and writing projects in the field of caricature and cartoon.
  • Other Benefits:
    The awardee will receive a stipend of $5,000.

    Names, affiliations, and addresses of 2 references from whom you have requested letters of recommendation.
  • Portfolio/Work Samples:
    A one-page abstract (no more than 250 words) that specifies how the proposed project is related to the field of caricature and cartoon and identifies specifically which of the Library's collections the applicant intends to utilize in research during the required two week period of residency at the Library of Congress.
  • Other Materials:
    Each recipient must also provide a copy of their dissertation, thesis, or postgraduate publication, upon its completion, for the Swann Foundation Fund files.A description of the proposed project (no longer than five pages) including: (a) accomplishments to date, (b) a timetable for completion, (c) an itemized budget (including necessary travel and research expenses that should not include foreign travel), (d) plans for use of specific Library of Congress collections, and (e) other pertinent information, including plans for publication. (Font no smaller than 11, single spacing unacceptable, 1 spacing permissible).Visual materials that support the project are required in the proposal or as separate photocopies (no more than 10 pages).
