This award was started in 1983 and managed by The World Wildlife Fund. It was made possible through the generous donations of the Marjorie Arundel Awards in Tropical Botany Fund and the Visiting Gardens Tropical Botany Scholarship Fund. The award was designed to foster the preservation of tropical forests to expand the number of botanists with field experience. Eligible applicants are Ph.D. candidates enrolled in a US university who anticipate completing the requirements for a Ph.D. in Botany within two years.

    - A personal letter describing the candidate's plans for the future and commitment to tropical conservation- A two-page statement of the proposed research, including its relevance to conservation, beginning with a summary statement of the proposals purpose, field location, plant group/vegetation type and questions to be answered.- Evidence of foreign language capability, if necessary for country of research- A brief curriculum vitae (1-2 pages).
