Scholarships for African Americans

Academics and athletics aren't the only criteria used for awarding scholarships. Ethnic background also can qualify students for help paying for college. As such, there are many scholarships available to African American students. Many of these scholarships are awarded by nonprofits, professional groups and business entities. While some are open to students from a variety of minority groups, others are available specifically to African American students. Eligibility requirements may include having a minimum GPA – often above 2.5 – and having financial need. Some scholarships are reserved for students pursuing a specific course of study, such as engineering, political science or teaching, or are only for students from a certain geographical area.
