Darrel Hess Community College Geography Scholarship is a $1,500 fund given to students who are pursuing geography as a major. The scholarship was established by Darrel Hess, author of McKnight's Physical Geography: A Landscape Appreciation to support any educational expenses in pursuing post-secondary education.

    The applicant must be an undergraduate student.
  • Financial Need:
    Required
  • College:
    The scholarship is open to a student currently enrolled at a US community college, junior college, city college, or similar two-year educational institution at the time they submit your application. The applicant may also be planning to transfer to a four-year institution.
  • Major/Career:
    The applicant must be pursuing a major in Geography.
  • Other Benefits:
    The applicant will receive a formal certificate of merit.

  • Judging Criteria:
    Selection will be based on the overall quality of the application, scholastic excellence and academic promise. Financial need will also be considered. The selection committee will observe the purposes and preferences noted above when evaluating proposals.

  • Essay:
    Present a personal statement outlining your academic and personal background, educational goals and interest in pursuing geography as a major at a baccalaureate institution.
  • Recommendation Letters:
    Applicants should arrange for the submission of two Letters of Recommendation from college instructors sent as an email attachment from the instructors own email address to [email protected] . If sent as a hard copy, they must be submitted in sealed envelopes with the instructors signature across the flap, and mailed to AAG Hess Scholarship, American Association of Geographers, 1710 16th Street NW, Washington DC 20009.
