Scholarships for Leadership

Leadership is an important quality. In recognition of that fact, there are a vast number of scholarships available to students who have exhibited strong leadership skills. Scholarships for leadership are offered by a variety of community foundations, nonprofits, professional groups, corporations and other organizations. Many of these scholarships are reserved for graduating high school seniors planning to attend accredited 2- or 4-year schools. Often, students are required to complete an online application and demonstrate their leadership activities. Some scholarship providers also look for extensive volunteer service and a strong work ethic. To be eligible, students also may need to submit their transcripts and meet a minimum GPA. This scholarship was named after Kazuma and Ichiko Hisanaga who served most of their lives as educators in the Hilo community. This scholarship supports students with a strong belief in the value of sports participation, leadership, and education. Open to graduating senior of Hilo High School planning to attend an accredited, four-year, not-for-profit institution within the continental U.S. with preference for NAIA, Division II or III schools. This scholarship was made possible through the generosity of Mrs. Hazel M. Tiney, as a memorial to B. Charles Tiney, M.ASCE, in 1980. The memorial fund proceeds are used for tuition assistance to needy and deserving college students studying in the field of engineering.
